Public schools were allowing every child to attend but some children from different groups were not giving the same opportunities as other children. The teachers were lacking on their teaching skills. For immigrants, American public schools were there portal to opportunity. In public schools students will learned English and learn how to be Americans. In the 1900s century, it was a little more different but there were still racial segregation. Unfortunately, students such as immigrants, were left behind because they couldn’t keep up with the classroom. They concluded that the curriculum was the problem. Teachers will disregard students based on stereotypes, which was not okay. After the World War I, tests were giving to identify the students intelligence known as the IQ tests. In the 1900s to the 1960s, it was a success but also a failure to American public schools. It's a success because many children were allowed to attend schools, elementary and secondary schools were build to close by neighborhood.
Children learn on their own pace. Teachers must have patience and be ready to use many strategies with students. Every child deserve to learn and if they need help, teachers must help. School benefits to children. They are able to graduate and go to college. They will have more opportunities in their lives. Many immigrants were heading to America because they saw better offers. In the book, it talks about Julian Nava, his older brother. a Mexican American students, who was shunted towards courses based on his race and his brother Henry joined the Navy Medical Corps and shipped to the Pacific and he saw many servicemen with lower levels of education were assigned to do a lot of hazardous duty. Which made him realize that the greater value of some education. Henry forced his brother Julian to take college prep courses and to basically succeed. Which Julian did, he graduated from high school and earn a doctorate in history from Harvard University and did many great things. This show that going to school can lead to a better future.
