Reflecting on Part ll

Every child deserves a BETTER FUTURE . Every child deserves GOOD EDUCATION . GOOD EDUCATION can only be found in a GOOD SC… | School fun, Education, Deserve better

Public schools were allowing every child to attend but some children from different groups were not giving the same opportunities as other children. The teachers were lacking on their teaching skills. For immigrants, American public schools were there portal to opportunity. In public schools students will learned English and learn how to be Americans. In the 1900s century, it was a little more different but there were still racial segregation. Unfortunately, students such as immigrants, were left behind because they couldn’t keep up with the classroom. They concluded that the curriculum was the problem. Teachers will disregard students based on stereotypes, which was not okay. After the World War I, tests were giving to identify the students intelligence known as the IQ tests. In the 1900s to the 1960s, it was a success but also a failure to American public schools. It's a success because many children were allowed to attend schools, elementary and secondary schools were build to close by neighborhood.
Children learn on their own pace. Teachers must have patience and be ready to use many strategies with students. Every child deserve to learn and if they need help, teachers must help. School benefits to children. They are able to graduate and go to college. They will have more opportunities in their lives. Many immigrants were heading to America because they saw better offers. In the book, it talks about Julian Nava, his older brother. a Mexican American students, who was shunted towards courses based on his race and his brother Henry joined the Navy Medical Corps and shipped to the Pacific and he saw many servicemen with lower levels of education were assigned to do a lot of hazardous duty. Which made him realize that the greater value of some education. Henry forced his brother Julian to take college prep courses and to basically succeed. Which Julian did, he graduated from high school and earn a doctorate in history from Harvard University and did many great things. This show that going to school can lead to a better future.

Module One Blog

The Common School

Public school was born in the mid-nineteenth century. It's founders called it the Common School and they were funded by local property taxes, charged no tuition, were open for all white children (which was very unfair for the children of color), and were governed by local school committees.

But education was handled differently in the eighteenth-century. Across all the colonies, education wasn't important. Education wan't free or public. Some free education was available in the church charity schools of East Coast cities, but it was far for some people. When it came to Education, it was unfair for certain people such as people of color. Little children were giving a hornbook a way to teach children to read, learn math or to receive religious instruction. Only the most privileged children had the opportunity to go to a college or university. At the time, Jefferson offered no education to slaves but he was continued to push for public schooling. Mann found a system built on inequity but later propose a new better system which is the common school. That's when things started to change for the better. The first step was free education, which Mann did. Free education and poor children were able to attend. Which is why i chose the word "improved" because reading this section and just thinking how they started education only for white children and a lot of segregation going around, they at least got one thing right which was free education. Not only that, but Catharine Beecher step up to fight for education and opportunity for women to become teachers.

Every child has an opportunity to have an education, and graduate from high school. Children being in school helps them become better, they get exposed not only to new ideas but they gain new skills such as friendship, participation, empathy and etc. Schools shapes a child's personality, they way they think, opinions and behavior. Schools also helps children create a life outside their families. Yes, children go to school to learn how to read, do math, science but schools helps shaped a person, theirs a lot of opportunities they could have and do, that doesn't give them outside in the real life. Having a career is a choice for everyone because some people can't afford college or financial aid doesn't cover them.

My education as a college student has shaped me to be better, to think better, challenge myself and not to give up. Being a college student could be frustrated at times because you're an adult and you must multitask your school and work life.

Literacy History

HI! My name is Anahi Flores and this is my second year at NJCU. I got my associate degree at HCCC and now I am going for my bachelor's. My major is elementary/secondary education (pre-k to 6th grade) and my minor is psychology. I am not sure what I want to be either a teacher or a counselor. But my overall goal is to graduate with my bachelor for education. I enjoy working with kids from different ages and seeing them how they develop and grow. On the left side is a picture of me, i recently dye my hair dark brown so I might look different now. On the right side is a picture of my boys. The oldest is 6 years old and the youngest is turning 4 soon. So I am a full time mom, full time student and I have a full time job so I barely have free time for myself. But when I do have, I usually rest. I enjoy going out with my kids, to Walmart or Target runs or just go to the park or get ice-cream, just spending time with my kids. I am excited to learn new things in this class and how this information could help me in the future.

Books wasn't my biggest hobby when I was young. I barely read books. The only time I read books was at school with the teacher in the classroom but at home, literacy wasn't encouraged as much. Both my parents speak Spanish and while growing up they didn't understand English at all. They both couldn't help me with homework or read the story the teacher will send for homework. When I started Kindergarten, I was put in a bilingual class but I remember the teacher spoke more Spanish than English. Entering the 4th grade, the school decided to switch me in a all-English class and I remember it was a hard year because I had to learn new words, read and understand the lesson of the day. But the teacher will have a one-on-one with me on her free time. I felt more discouraged when I was learning to read because I struggle to pronounce the words and I felt embarrassed to read aloud in the classroom. I felt as if the students were laughing at me or looking at me funny because I am reading slow and couldn't pronounce the words right. I did try to read growing up but I would get frustrated when I couldn't sound out the words so I would skip to the words and continue reading. If I read more growing up, I feel like I would have improved my vocabulary much better.

I began to feel literate when I was in 5th grade. Unfortunately, I had to repeat the 4th grade because of my grades but I felt that my English language develop entering the 5th grade. Although I felt embarrassed reading out loud but I found it very helpful or getting into groups to read and take turns. I had a friend who helped me read and pronounce the words I couldn't because she notice that I will get upset with my self. I do appreciated my teachers from elementary school because they will first read the book with me individual and then when I go home, I will reread it by myself. Interacting with other kids also help me learn new words. Now, I enjoy reading books but I wouldn't say its my hobby, but I encourage myself to improve my literacy. One way I continue using literacy is trying to read at nights when I have time , I usually look at articles, events in the news before I go to sleep. Another way is writing on my notebook about my day, or how I was feeling.

I feel like literacy is very important for young children because it helps them learn how to read or write and not struggle as much as I did. We need literacy in order to engage with the written words in everyday life.
